The Pets' Parasites Formula FAQ

This page answers the most frequently asked questions about The Pets' Parasites Formula.

Which domestic animals species is for the parasites formula for?

All. It is most frequently used in cats and dogs in the fight against common parasites, ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. But it can be used for other species of pets, or larger animals, from the canary to the horse, to fight against insects and acarids, such as flies, mosquitoes and lice.

Are there risks in using this natural approach in animals?

This formula contains a blend of nine essential oils chosen for their content in natural active substances, and it is appropriate to respect the precautions for use, and the indicated dosages.

This formula has existed in that form and has been sold for more than twenty years to be used to treat any type of pet, of any age. No incidents have been reported. Its ancestors, used in veterinary practice, were also deemed very safe.

The natural active substances are biodegradable, and will be eliminated by the living organisms and the environment. The danger of cumulative effects when using this formula is almost nonexistent.

Because they are derived from plants, the composition of essential oils varies from one batch to another. Each batch of essential oil used for preparing the formulas of this website is subject to a screening of its composition in the laboratory. A special care is taken in selecting essential oils to achieve effective blends and dismiss active substances that are unwanted in the care of pets.

In order to get very young animals used to the formula, it is recommended to start using diluted methods (shampoo, spray), before using the pure product in spot-on.

Although it is not likely to be detrimental to their health, avoid that pets ingest this undiluted formula, some may find the experience unpleasant.

Before using this product in sick animals, animals being treated for a medical condition, please seek the advice of the attending veterinarian.

Which method to choose for its application in cats or dogs?

It all depends on how quickly you need this formula to work. The different methods are described in the leaflet accompanying the bottle, which you can view and print here.

For prevention: the spot-on technique is sufficient. You only need to know how to apply the formula, by spreading out the fur of the animal, directly onto the skin, between the shoulders, a spot where it is difficult for it to lick it. It takes several days for the formula to diffuse over the entire skin of the animal, and protect it efficiently.

In case of infestation: the best way to react when the parasites are already present on the animal and its environment is to begin with a shampoo, in which you have blended the essential oils of the formula. This is done in two steps, a first, rather quick, allowing to degrease skin and coat, and a second, more thorough, which consists in applying the shampoo all over the body of the animal, including the underparts, tail, and legs. You must let this second application sit for about five more minutes before rinsing. For added protection, it is possible to apply a spray with the formula just after rinsing. Then let the animal dry itself.

If shampooing your pet seems difficult, quick results can be obtained by directly applying the formula by sraying. Massage well the skin and coat, as if you were applying a hair lotion. You must make sure that all of the animal skin is soaked with the solution for optimal protection, and it is sometimes necessary to repeat this operation to obtain this result.

You must also remember to carefully brush the coat of the animal in order to remove dead skin, flakes, and hair that can be obstacles to an effective dissemination of the formula, as well as shelters for some parasites.

I do not know if my cat / dog already has fleas, it scratches itself: start with a shampoo to clean its skin debris and degrease it in order to allow its good impregnation by essential oils. And maintain protection by applying the formula by the method that seems most suitable for your pet, or for yourself..

In any case, you must act to control the parasites in the near environment of the animal , which can be achieved by regular cleaning and spraying of the formula.

Note that the spray to be applied on the animal does not contain alcohol. The information leaflet contains necessary explanations for the preparation of the two types of sprays.

Can I use the Pets' Parasites Formula with a diffuser?

Yes, to achieve a "fogger" effect and maintain control of the environment. However, The Home Insects Formula lends itself better to diffusing and has a little more widespread activity.

The direct application of the Parasites Formula in the animal's environment using sprays will be faster in its effectiveness. Diffusion of oils in a burner or diffuser, will be slower, but will reach, over time, interstices, such as gaps between floorboards, which are accessible to fleas but difficult to treat using sprays only.

Is the recommended frequency of use sufficient in all cases?

No. There are pets that stay at home, indoors, which are easy to handle, and are relatively sheltered from pests infestations. And there are animals that go out, exposed to rain, or bathe, for which you will need to consider applying the formula more often..

The right frequency of use is determined based on the results you see.

Is The Pets' Parasites Formula effective in protecting against Leishmaniasis and agents of transmission of that disease?

A veterinary parasitology study (see here) shows a real efficacy of essential oils components against different vectors of leishmaniasis, in various stages of development, including some species of Phlebotomus. Those components are also contained in the Pets' Parasites Formula.

For this purpose, in addition to treating the animal, you must also spray buildings and surrounding areas, in which there are eggs and larvae of these insects. This also creates, a repulsive environment for adults.

If you live in a high risk area for Leishmaniasis, please consult a local veterinarian to discuss the most suitable protection for your pet and its environment.

My dog, cat, licks itself, right after I applied the parasites formula with a spray or shampoo. Is that bad?

No. Some pets may hate the "taste" of the undiluted formula, but the dilution obtained in the spray or shampoo will not allow to trigger a negative reaction from the animal. Licking does not diminish the effectiveness of the formula, skin and hair are already impregnated.

Will using the Parasites Formula change the appearance of the coat of my pet?

Using the undiluted formula, "spot-on", on an area of very white fur can cause mild beige coat coloring at the location of the application, that will fade in less than two days.

The other application methods do not trigger any change in the appearance of the coat.

The product has a light scent, mostly from eucalyptus and mint, that gives your pet a fresh smell and a sense of well-being.

"I read articles about pets advising to add vinegar with essential oils to increase the protection against insects."

To be avoided. The vinegar will not increase the repellent activity of the Parasites Formula, and will leave a sticky residue on the hair, which is likely to attract flies and other insects. The acidity of vinegar can also, over time, unbalance the pH of the skin and generate an imbalance in its bacterial flora, exposing it to other infections.

Can the Pets' Parasites Formula be used to treat birds in the aviary or in the barnyard?

Yes. For Birds, it will be necessary to use a diluted form, making a spray with the proportions indicated in the formula of the spray for the environment. You can then treat the aviaries, the barnyard and their occupants, avoiding spraying the formula in their eyes, and in the drinking troughs. Repeating these sprays every ten to fifteen days, depending on the season and the risk of infestation. This is enough in many cases!

Why doesn't your Pets' Parasites Formula contain a Geranium essential oil?

The repellent activity of Geranium is linked to the two main components of the essential oil, which are geraniol and limonene. Geraniol is reputed allergenic in Pets, and incidents have happened with geraniol-only spot-on products. Out of precaution, geraniol has been banned from this formula. Limonene, which is absolutely safe, is brought in the blend by several other oils it contains.

To fight against fleas and other insects, keep in mind that some of those pests develop, same as germs, resistances to commonly encountered active substances. Geranium is common in our regions, while plants whose essential oils are contained in the parasites formula are far less common and will be more effective to "surprise" our local parasites.

My cat / dog has fleas / ticks. Is that serious?

Yes, it can be. Diseases can be transmitted to your companion by a parasitic infestation of external parasites. Fleas may contain tapeworm larvae, ticks can transmit a disease called babesiosis or piroplasmosis, or Lyme disease, and mosquitoes in some areas, can transmit leishmaniasis..

It is very important to be careful when you see a parasitic infestation in your pet, and do not hesitate to contact your attending veterinarian.

I have been treating my pet with spot-on products from the vet and nothing seems to work! What's happening?

It is linked to resistances that insects develop to survive pesticides. Mostly in rural areas, if there are lots of pesticides used for agriculture, some fleas, mosquitoes, flies, and ticks, have become resistant. The product that is sold for pets is the same, or really similar to those molecules which are used for the crops. The three drops that you use on your pets will not make a difference.

Do essential oils really work for that purpose?

Although you won't see it on TV, the Pets' Parasites Formula is the best-seller of this website. It has been for many years. Frequent customers are pet owners, veterinarians, breeders, that have replaced the trendy chemicals by the older natural way of doing things, and fully satisfied with their choice.
